Anatolian Shepherd Health, By the Numbers

"Big dogs have big health problems" gets repeated so often it's treated as settled. Breed-by-breed data tells a more specific story — and the Anatolian Shepherd's numbers are worth actually looking at instead of assuming.

Start with the breed club's own data. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club of America puts average lifespan at 11–13 years in a safe home environment — working dogs face higher mortality, but mostly from job-related causes (vehicle strikes, poisoning, snakebite, gunshot, heatstroke) rather than internal disease. OFA data cited in the ASDCA Health Handbook shows 88.4% of evaluated dogs have normal hips and 94.6% have normal elbows. Entropion (an inward-rolling eyelid) shows up in most if not all breeding lines to some degree, and the drop-ear structure makes ear infections fairly common. Despite a deep chest, the breed does not show a high incidence of bloat/GDV — a genuine outlier among giant breeds.

Head-to-head on hip dysplasia, a broader independent OFA dataset (evaluations from 1974–2010, sample sizes from 108 to 221,077 per breed) puts the picture in context:

For lifespan, the picture is similar, though the Anatolian Shepherd figure comes from the breed club's own reporting while the others are drawn from a 2024 cross-referenced study of UK veterinary records — different methodologies, so treat this as an order-of-magnitude comparison rather than a precise one:

Why the gap exists at all: UC Davis's 90,000-dog study found genetic disorder prevalence doesn't track a blanket "purebred vs. mixed" rule — it's condition-specific, with 10 of 24 studied disorders more common in purebreds, 13 roughly equal, and just one more common in mixed breeds. Separately, a functional-breed-grouping study of purebred dogs found working/pastoral breeds carry elevated risk specifically for structural, size-linked conditions — elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), aortic stenosis — while toy breeds carry a different risk profile (portosystemic shunt, patellar luxation) that's almost entirely absent from working guardian breeds.

For a landrace-descended breed specifically, that pattern tracks the history: Anatolian Shepherds were selected for centuries primarily by function — could this dog survive a wolf, work all night, stay healthy enough to keep working — rather than a closed studbook chasing a narrow show silhouette. The comparatively low, OFA-verified hip dysplasia rate is consistent with that. It doesn't erase the structural exposure that comes with being a 45–65 kg dog in the first place — elbow and cardiac risk are still part of the working-breed package — but on the numbers that get cited most, the Anatolian Shepherd sits at the healthy end of the large-breed field, not the alarming one.
